Ad Infinitum – Chapter III Downfall (2023)

Ad Infinitum belong to the newest generation of bands, having released their debut in 2020. Fast forward to 2023 we already have their 3rd album in our hands. They play Alternative Metal with some Symphonic touches that are limited in orchestrations and are more closer to bands like Amaranthe, meaning that they have a modern approach on their songwriting with many catchy moments. If we can describe them with one word, that would be professionalism. Of course the support of Napalm Records allows them to maintain a high quality in everything they do, but without talent, dedication and said professionalism, this support would lead to nowhere by itself. Finally, it seems Ad Infinitum had a clear vision on the sound of the band since its inception, with each album cumulating the growth, evolution and experiences of its members without them deviating from their core sound.

This 3rd chapter consists of 12 compositions with durations varying between 3 and less than 5 minutes. All songs are direct and as you understand from the durations, their structure is straightforward by following the pattern of verses, choruses, bridge/solo and chorus again. As many bands have already proven, writing simpler and catchy songs that are actually good is very hard and Ad Infinitum totally nailed it. Instead of relying on a good chorus and calling it a day, each part of any given song is great.

What makes it possible is the great voice of Melissa Bonny, one of the best vocalists of her generation. She blends clean with brutal techniques and she has such control over her voice that can switch between styles seamlessly, a feat that is not limited in the studio as she has proven during live performances many times. Her bandmates are not without credit however, as they are equally talented and always impress with their playing. Any song of the album will prove that point.

On the tracks themselves, each moment can stand on its own and does not rely on the whole result to shine. Some may stand one step higher than the others, but it is not a matter of quality but rather personal preference. For example there is nothing wrong with Serpent’s Downfall. If I stumble upon it on a playlist I will have a great time, but it comes straight after the amazing streak of Ravenous, Under the Burning Skies and my favorite Architects of Paradise. What I also liked is when the band enters Djent mode during the middle of some songs, demanding even the most reluctant of necks to move.

If you want sharp riffs in your metal or complex song structures, this album may not be for you. Same if you read Symphonic touches at the beginning of this review and wait to hear choirs or operatic vocals. Downfall sounds fresh and modern and tries to avoid treading on paths that have been walked by countless others before. As such, it must be approached with an open mind. Personally, I believe that Ad Infinitum will hold a prestigious place in Metal in a few years. They are currently touring the world with Kamelot, so I can’t wait to see how all this experience will translate in their next studio work.
